English enthusiast and educator, Aaron Brame guides both experienced and reluctant writers through this popular poetry workshop, which gives participants many opportunities to write individually and collaboratively. Each session participants analyze the work of treasured African American poets such as Phyllis Wheatly, Langston Hughes, Maya Angelou, Yusef Komunyakaa, and others. Participants then use the studied poetry as inspiration for original work. Engage in lively discussions about the poets’ choices and discuss themes of childhood, courage, and surprise. Participants also learn the process of revision, publication, and presenting their work.
This 7-week course meets at the Whitehaven Library on Thursdays from 11am-12:30pm on 4.3*, 4.11, 4.25, 5.2, 5.9, 5.16, and 5.23. *The first session is on a Wednesday, the subsequent sessions occur on Thursdays. *Please note there is no class on 4.18.
